Before social media made it easy for first-year students to get to know other folks on campus, they had to do it the old-fashioned way: by putting on a beanie; hanging a placard around their neck that listed their name, hometown, and major; and heading out to collect signatures from upper-class students—which sometimes were given only “in exchange for ‘duties rendered,’” recalls Norie (Riddering) Burnet ’52, who sent us this photo.
