Friends and Alumni Hit the Greens to Raise Some Green

Despite the 100-degree heat and high humidity on June 10, 103 people took to the links at West Windsor’s Mercer Oaks Golf Course to take part in the 17th annual TCNJ Athletics Golf Outing. The event, sponsored this year by Sodexho, has become a cornerstone fund-raising activity of the athletics department.
“The idea is to bring alumni and friends together to recap the year,” said John Castaldo, ’82, MEd ’83 director of athletics. “There is always a feel-good atmosphere surrounding the golf outing. All of our staff and coaches look forward to working it and helping to fund-raise for it.”
On the surface, the order of the day might appear to be “have fun”; however, the event also plays an important role in raising money for the department. Castaldo said that much of the money raised each year helps fund the Annual Scholar-Athlete Luncheon, which honors student-athletes who achieve a 3.3 grade point average or better while competing as a member of a varsity team at TCNJ. (This year, a record 129 student-athletes were recognized at the luncheon.) The money raised also helps the department pay for team equipment and travel.
Both Castaldo and Head Tennis Coach Scott Dicheck, who organized this year’s event, said the outing would not have been possible without the generous support of sponsors. In addition to this year’s title sponsor, Sodexho, there were several platinum sponsors: Adidas, Barnes & Noble, Borden Perlman Insurance, Flooring Technology, Hedinger & Lawless LLC, Ritchie and Page Distributing Co. Inc., and Willis Honda.
