The College community was saddened by the death of longtime professor Norman Neff, who passed away prior to the start of this academic year on July 6, 2010. He was 65 years old.
Neff received his BS from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and MS from Stanford University, both in mathematics. He received his PhD in statistics from Rutgers University, and in addition to that held an MSE in computer information systems from the University of Pennsylvania.
He came to the College in 1968, beginning as an instructor of mathematics. In 1995, he earned the title of professor of computer science and mathematics. During his 42 years on campus, he taught a broad range of math and computer science courses.
“Norm will remain in our eternal memory as a most thoughtful and measured colleague—an elder statesman of our department,” said Miroslav Martinovic, chair of the computer science department. “He will also be remembered as a cheerful friend with a subtle, lucid sense of humor.”
Neff is survived by his wife, Nancy Parker Neff; a sister, Amy Neff, and brother-in-law, Brian Griffin, and their son, Ezra, and daughter, Miriam.
