Carol Bresnahan Appointed Provost and Executive Vice President
In July 2008, Carol Bresnahan, PhD, will begin her tenure as provost and executive vice president. She comes to TCNJ from the University of Toledo, where she served as the vice provost for academic programs and policies and as professor of history. During her time there, Bresnahan oversaw the first-year-experience, honors, study-abroad, and service-learning programs, as well as the offices of the university registrar and undergraduate research.

In July 2008, Carol Bresnahan, PhD, will begin her tenure as provost and executive vice president. She comes to TCNJ from the University of Toledo, where she served as the vice provost for academic programs and policies and as professor of history. During her time there, Bresnahan oversaw the first-year-experience, honors, study-abroad, and service-learning programs, as well as the offices of the university registrar and undergraduate research.
Prior to her appointment as vice provost, she served as an American Council on Education fellow at the University of Illinois and as chair of the Department of History at the University of Toledo. She has been a faculty member in the Department of History at the University of Toledo since 1985. Bresnahan earned an AB from Smith College, as well as an AM and PhD from Brown University.
“Dr. Bresnahan was selected from an extraordinary pool of candidates,” President R. Barbara Gitenstein said upon announcing Bresnahan’s appointment in February. “We are so fortunate to be adding her tremendous talents to the College’s leadership team in this essential role.”
As TCNJ’s second-ranking administrative officer, Bresnahan will provide leadership and strategic vision while facilitating a living-learning community throughout the College. She will encourage academic excellence and faculty scholarship, close coordination between TCNJ’s multiple disciplinary and interdisciplinary units, and collaborative partnerships between student and academic affairs. Bresnahan will also foster a culture of shared governance, provide skillful oversight of financial resources, and promote an institutional vision consistent with TCNJ’s mission and core beliefs.
“I am delighted to be joining TCNJ,” said Bresnahan. “The College has outstanding students, dedicated teacher-scholars, a hard-working and creative administration and staff, and a devoted Board of Trustees. My career has been one of passionate commitment to public higher education, and I especially look forward to joining President Gitenstein’s team and to advancing the College’s mission and goals.”
Beth Paul, who has served as as interim provost since July 2006, will assume the role of vice provost.
