International Education Week Activities Planned
Several events that are open to alumni are scheduled for International Education Week, November 16 through 20, 2009.
Events are sponsored by the Office of International and Off-Campus Programs, the Departments of Modern Languages and History, and the International Studies Program. The Changing Forms of Violence in Afghanistan
Lecture by David B. Edwards, Professor of Anthropology at Williams College and founder of the Williams Afghan Media Resource Project (WAMP), an online resource for the study of Afghanistan.

David B. Edwards is professor of anthropology at Williams College. Professor Edwards’ academic interests include political anthropology, historical anthropology, violence and culture, documentary film and visual culture, and humanitarianism and post-conflict societies in the Near East and South Asia. He is a specialist on Afghanistan, and has published numerous articles and book chapters on religious ideology and political leadership. Professor Edwards lived in Kabul before the communist takeover in 1978. During Soviet occupation, he spent several years conducting research along the Afghan-Pakistan border and spent time with mujahidin resistance parties in training camps and behind Soviet lines. These experiences became the basis of two books, Heroes of the Age: Moral Fault Lines on the Afghan Frontier and Before Taliban: Genealogies of the Afghan Jihad, both published by University of California Press. Professor Edwards is a founder of the Williams Afghan Media Resource Project (WAMP), an online resource for the study of Afghanistan.

The Nicaragua Solidarity Project – Women in Learning and Leadership (W.I.L.L.)
Members of W.I.L.L. who led and participated in a two-semester, international community engaged learning experience, will describe the project and its culminating trip to Nicaragua, where they witnessed firsthand the struggles and successes of people profoundly impacted by war and social policies. They will discuss how they prepared themselves to be in solidarity and dialogue with people who have been marginalized.
