In addition to Dean <strong>William Keep<\/strong> and key administrative staff, they were joined by TCNJ President <strong>R. Barbara Gitenstein<\/strong>, finance faculty, and 24 alumni working in a variety of financial industries including <strong>Joe Knight \u201911<\/strong> who is now an Analyst in Global Real Assets at JPM. The evening consisted of a formal discussion followed by a social networking reception, which was generously sponsored by Chiarello. Once again, <strong>Paul Sullivan \u201985<\/strong>, managing director at Merrill Lynch, served as moderator for an impressive panel of TCNJ alumni: <strong>Andrew Holzheimer \u201982<\/strong>, executive director, Investment Bank Technology at JPMorgan Chase; <strong>Gregory Peters \u201998<\/strong>, managing director at Morgan Stanley; and <strong>Laura Ritter \u201900<\/strong>, group vice president, Financial Reporting at PVH Corp.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5233\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5233\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/120328_hamerman_033.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5233\" title=\"120328_hamerman_033\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/120328_hamerman_033-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/120328_hamerman_033-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/120328_hamerman_033.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Guy Chiarello \u201981, CIO, JPMorgan Chase<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Holzheimer responded regarding the \u201ctoughest career decision\u201d he had to make: &#8220;Leaving the government after active duty and a successful military career. I took a gamble and retired at 42 with a pension and threw the dice to work in Mom and Dad\u2019s company. The grass is not always greener\u2014it\u2019s brown everywhere. Be prepared to take some calculated risks to move forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Later, discussing issues of longevity and burn-out, he added, &#8220;\u2028You need the courage to make a change if it\u2019s not something you love. Knowledge is power; it gives you flexibility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Peters addressed the question of labor mobility, \u201cwhat factors can set you apart to move from the back to the front office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The vast majority take the non-traditional path,&#8221; said Peters. &#8220;It\u2019s about perseverance, relationship building, the ability to impress certain individuals. If you have a goal in mind, sometimes you have to suck it up to get the prize.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the question of longevity and burn-out, he suggested, &#8220;\u2028Reinvent your selves as much as possible; but give yourselves time to unplug, relax.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ritter shared her experience when asked \u201cWhat career move did you regret?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Leaving PHV. I wanted to try doing something different, but when I left I wasn\u2019t happy with the change. It was a tough decision but I was excited to have the opportunity to go back,&#8221; Ritter said.<\/p>\n<p>She also addressed the question of longevity and burn-out: &#8220;\u2028Stick with it, putting in the extra hours when necessary, to learn more and grow with your career. Get as much training as possible along the way!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Chiarello shared a memory of an early meeting with Keep, when he realized they valued the same attributes in employees and students: inquisitiveness, integrity, confidence and creativity.\u00a0 He closed the conversation with comments about choosing a fortune cookie message to live by.
