There\u2019s nothing quite like curling up with a hot cup of tea in the winter months to soothe your body and soul. We turn to Deborah Raab \u201976, a certified tea specialist and founder of Tea-For-All located in the Trenton Farmers Market, to spill some facts about her favorite drink.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Tea is the second-most consumed beverage in the world, right behind water.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Everyone loves a tea party. Japanese <\/span>ceremonies promote purity, respect, and <\/span>tranquility. In South America, it is a sign of <\/span>hospitality to pass around a gourd filled with <\/span>yerba mate tea and sip it through a metal <\/span>straw.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Tea grows all over the world, but most is <\/span>grown just above and just below the equator.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. All tea comes from the same plant: Camellia <\/span>sinensis. The processing of the plant deter<\/span>mines the color of the tea \u2014 black, green,<\/span>oolong, yellow, or white.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. The popular orange pekoe tea does not con<\/span>tain any oranges. Pekoe refers to the highest <\/span>quality black tea, which once was reserved <\/span>for the Dutch Royal Family, known as the <\/span>House of Orange.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Tea is like wine \u2014 its taste is determined by <\/span>the way it is processed as well as the soil and <\/span>climate in which it grows.<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Teas require different temperatures and <\/span>infusion times. Brew green tea for 2 to 3 <\/span>minutes with water at 175\u00b0F, while black tea <\/span>takes 3 to 5 minutes of brewing in near-boiling <\/span>water.<\/span><\/p>\n

8. Tea has caffeine, but you may not feel the same <\/span>jolt you get from coffee. That\u2019s because tea <\/span>contains tannins and the amino acid <\/span>L-theanine, which both mitigate the effects of <\/span>caffeine.<\/span><\/p>\n

9. That chamomile you drink before bed? It\u2019s not <\/span>really tea. Beverages made from herbs, fruits, <\/span>or spices are technically considered infusions. <\/span>However, it has become common practice to r<\/span>efer to these beverages as herbal teas.<\/span><\/p>\n

10. Prefer your tea iced? Practice the cold brew <\/span>method: Use 2 tablespoons tea to 1 quart cold <\/span>water and brew in the refrigerator overnight. <\/span>Hands down, the best method.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
