{"id":12455,"date":"2024-02-01T15:51:08","date_gmt":"2024-02-01T20:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/?p=12455"},"modified":"2024-02-09T09:38:00","modified_gmt":"2024-02-09T14:38:00","slug":"what-a-ride","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/?p=12455","title":{"rendered":"What a ride"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Mark Koerner \u201923 and Matthew Smith \u201923<\/strong> spent the fall on the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail \u2014 a 4,200-mile cross-country route mapped out by the Adventure Cycling Association.<\/p>\n<p>Both were runners for TCNJ\u2019s cross country team, so they assumed they were in shape for such a ride. But the Blue Ridge Mountains in the early days of the trip tested their strength. \u201cWe didn\u2019t realize how hard it was until we did it,\u201d says Smith.<\/p>\n<p>The pair documented their travels on Instagram as they worked their way to a $10,000 fundraising goal for Ocean\u2019s Harbor House, a New Jersey nonprofit that provides services to vulnerable youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn social media, it\u2019s \u2018Oh, this is amazing,\u2019\u201d says Koerner. \u201cBut there was a lot of work between each of those posts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That work included surviving on Pop Tarts and peanut butter, repairing bike parts with duct tape, and a lot of towelette showers.
