{"id":12226,"date":"2023-10-12T10:58:20","date_gmt":"2023-10-12T14:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/?p=12226"},"modified":"2023-10-12T11:52:12","modified_gmt":"2023-10-12T15:52:12","slug":"a-dip-into-the-deep-blue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/?p=12226","title":{"rendered":"A dip into the deep blue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve always been obsessed with water,\u201d says Elizabeth Mackie, professor of art and art history. That obsession, influenced by her time spent near various water bodies, has long inspired her work. And no wonder. Water is ubiquitous, covering 71% of the earth\u2019s surface, rendering visuals of the planet in countless shades of blue. These days, though, there is an urgency to her art and her desire to bring awareness to this most elemental ingredient in our daily lives.<\/p>\n<p>Whether in its absence in some places or its overabundance in others, water manages to wreak havoc around the world. A warming planet has been blamed for an increase in the intensity of rainstorms and hurricanes, and the resulting flooding, while in other pockets of the globe water is in tragically short supply. Mackie is not alone in her thinking about water. The issue has seeped into the studies of professors and their students across the TCNJ campus.<\/p>\n<h2>Precious resource depicters<\/h2>\n<p>For the past 15 years, Mackie\u2019s time spent by the water\u2019s edge and the impact of global warming on the resource have together influenced her artwork. An interdisciplinary artist, Mackie often works with handmade paper, creating different textures and dying the paper many shades of blue to represent moving water. During her time in isolation due to the pandemic, she took \u201chours and hours\u201d of video of the river. This past summer, she and students Nicole Molnar \u201923 and Michaela Moran \u201924 pored over the video for creative inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>The students learned Mackie\u2019s paper-making techniques (a challenging undertaking that involves lots and lots of water) and spent the summer with their fingernails dyed blue. \u201cThe beautiful colors and patterns we saw in the water videos impacted our choices in creating the paper,\u201d says Moran.<\/p>\n<p>One of Mackie\u2019s works, <em>The Delaware River<\/em>, is an immersive experience with 17 minutes of video projected onto a large, white, sculpted board. \u201cYou can move all the way around it,\u201d says Mackie, \u201cso you become part of the piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Molnar and Moran formed the board based on composition and balance that would create interest when images were projected onto it. But the energy of the water was also evident. \u201cThe form does have a resemblance to the water and its waves,\u201d says Moran.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Delaware River<\/em> was recently accepted into the prestigious International Biennial for Paper Fibre Art in Taiwan, a five-month-long exhibition that opens in November. Among the 44 artists represented in the biennial, only six are American. \u201cWe can help others to think about the impact humans have on the Delaware River by offering a visual reminder that we are directly intertwined with nature,\u201d says Moran. \u201cI hope when people look at the pieces, they see the beauty that inspired our choices and then have a sense of urgency to protect that beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>H2O\u2019s cautious historian<\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to water, history professor Matthew Bender takes a global view. As a scholar and president of the International Water History Association, his primary interest is in understanding humankind\u2019s relationship with water \u2014 what Bender calls \u201cthe most vital resource for human development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bender has focused much of his research in Africa, studying the management of water in remote communities, such as on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and the connection between water and the 800,000 people living on the slopes of the world\u2019s tallest freestanding mountain. It\u2019s the subject of his 2019 book, <em>Water Brings No Harm: Management Knowledge and the Struggle for the Waters of Kilimanjaro<\/em>, for which he conducted about 100 interviews with local people.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12316\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12316\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12316\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bender_2754_DSC8430_v2_1080x1080-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Matthew Bender\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bender_2754_DSC8430_v2_1080x1080-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bender_2754_DSC8430_v2_1080x1080-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bender_2754_DSC8430_v2_1080x1080-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bender_2754_DSC8430_v2_1080x1080-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bender_2754_DSC8430_v2_1080x1080-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bender_2754_DSC8430_v2_1080x1080.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matthew Bender<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He says the problems related to water scarcity in one part of the globe are often replicated in other corners. \u201cPart of the job of a good African historian,\u201d he says, \u201cis to convince people that the problems in Africa are not exclusive to Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As he scans the global waterscape, from the American Southwest to sub-Saharan Africa, Bender cites gloomy forecasts that, as early as 2025, two-thirds of the world\u2019s population will lack access to clean water at least one month a year. \u201cMy interest is in understanding the development of that problem over time,\u201d he says. \u201cHow is it that the one thing that everybody needs to live could be in such chronic short supply?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the current and pending shortage, Bender says, is multipronged: climate change, surely, but also urbanization and rising rates of consumption. In the United States, fast-growing cities in arid locations, such as Phoenix and Las Vegas, illustrate the problem. Much of their water is piped in from great distances, and climate change only exacerbates the problem, which tends to make wet places wetter and dry places drier. He notes, for example, that a sustained lack of snowfall in the higher elevations of the American West and Southwest has lowered reservoirs to dangerous levels. \u201cThere are environmental limitations that are hard to do anything about,\u201d Bender says.<\/p>\n<p>One solution: \u201cThe built landscape of the city could be rethought in a way that recognizes the acute scarcity of the resource,\u201d says Bender. He points out that golf courses and swimming pools, ubiquitous features of the region, are \u201chuge consumers\u201d of water. Reducing their numbers would help, as would replacing lawns with hardscaping. \u201cPeople tried to have their cake and eat it too with regard to development in these places,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd it just may not work anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From Bender\u2019s view, the worldwide water crisis has typically been considered more of a problem in underdeveloped countries. No longer. \u201cIt\u2019s becoming a problem that will be everybody\u2019s problem,\u201d Bender says.<\/p>\n<h2>The height watchman<\/h2>\n<p>Michael Horst jokes that his eventual career choice came down to what he describes as his youthful laziness. \u201cI thought I\u2019d love to have a job where I could go fishing on my lunch break,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out his work does bring him in regular contact with rivers, with or without his fishing gear. A professor of civil engineering, Horst is focused on trying to gauge the impact of rainfall runoff, particularly in powerful storms that cause severe flooding. He calls the discipline \u201cextreme rain event modeling.\u201d And with climate change causing more intense rain events \u2014 in New Jersey, Hurricane Ida in 2021 was a deadly example \u2014 his work is as timely as it is topical. \u201cMore rainfall means more water in the river, and more water in the river means more flooding,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12318\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12318\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12318\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Horst_2757_DSC1304_1080x1080-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Horst\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Horst_2757_DSC1304_1080x1080-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Horst_2757_DSC1304_1080x1080-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Horst_2757_DSC1304_1080x1080-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Horst_2757_DSC1304_1080x1080-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Horst_2757_DSC1304_1080x1080-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.tcnjmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Horst_2757_DSC1304_1080x1080.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12318\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Horst<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Traditional flood zone maps, used to dictate which property owners are required to purchase flood insurance, Horst says, no longer apply. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing the intensity of the rainfall has really been starting to increase,\u201d he says. \u201cBefore, if we saw three inches of rain in one hour, that\u2019s a lot of rain, and we\u2019d expect that to happen once every 100 years. Now we might see that kind of intensity once every 20 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Horst has been researching severe rain events in New Jersey, and he\u2019s now expanding that research across the Northeast. Using data collected from Hurricane Ida, he\u2019s aiming to develop a forecasting model that could help municipalities respond to heavy rainfall in real time. \u201cIn essence,\u201d Horst says, \u201cwe\u2019re making predictions on what the stream is going to look like in two hours or two days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His research, rooted in determining a river\u2019s flow rate \u2014 measured in cubic feet per second \u2014 can also help engineers and land-use planners decide how high to build new bridges and other hydraulic structures. \u201cIt\u2019s the kind of thing that most people don\u2019t think about,\u201d Horst says. \u201cBut somebody has to.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A quality controller<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cMy overarching focus,\u201d says Alexis Mraz, professor of public health, \u201cis quantifying risk in water.\u201d She started as a master\u2019s student in environmental health science. Back then, she focused on frogs, given their standing as harbingers of the health of the very water in which they reside. Moving forward, Mraz concentrated on the connection between the environment \u2014 water specifically \u2014 and human health.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s interested in the broad strokes \u2014 for example, if the waters where we recreate such as oceans, lakes, and city splashpads, are healthy. But her research, of course, drills down to a more detailed level. She looks at water and sanitation health and how to assess \u2014 and reduce \u2014 the risk of waterborne contaminants. Mraz and her fellow researchers are focused on reducing outbreaks of Legionellosis, a disease caused by the bacteria. She hopes the research will be expanded to include other opportunistic pathogens that can cause outbreaks in health care settings.<\/p>\n<p>In her lab at TCNJ, Mraz spikes a bioreactor with <em>Legionella<\/em> to measure its growth over time. She will use the resulting data to devise a predictive model that takes into account building design and aspects of a site\u2019s plumbing system, such as piping material, water treatment, boiler types, and temperature.
