Six former Lions standouts and two Teams of Distinction will be enshrined in TCNJ’s Athletic Hall of Fame during Homecoming Weekend. Here is how they punched their tickets:
Carl Jones ’87
A fierce defensive tackle before moving to linebacker, Jones still holds the football program record for career tackles (284). He was a tri-captain his senior season and a member of the All-East Coast Athletic Conference Division III Team.
Marie Whalen ’90
Whalen won four national titles: two in field hockey (1985, 1988) and two in lacrosse (1987, 1988), while earning First Team All-America honors in both sports. She was a captain in both sports and a member of several NCAA all-tournament teams.
Howard Forman ’92
The right-hander went 26-4 on the mound (5-1 in NCAA tournament competition) for the baseball team, claiming All-American honors in 1991 and 1992. He still holds the program record for career complete games (18), was an Academic All-American, and won the College’s Varsity T award in 1992.
Robin Selbst ’96
She’s the lone Division III athlete on record to win national championships in three different team sports: lacrosse, field hockey, and softball (earning back-to-back First Team All-America honors in the latter two). As the assistant coach for TCNJ’s field hockey and lacrosse teams, Selbst has won five more national championships.
Steve Libro ’65
The hard-nosed running back also played defense for the football team, and was a key member of the legendary 1963 team (see below). Libro went on to enjoy a successful coaching career in education at North Brunswick High School.
Fred Surgent ’64
A three-sport athlete at the College, Surgent made his mark in men’s gymnastics, and was the primary reason why the Lions’ program went from an exhibition team to varsity status. He also played soccer and held the
school record in the pole vault for the track and field team.
Teams of Distinction
1985 Lacrosse
The squad won the first-ever Division III women’s lacrosse national championship in NCAA tournament history, capping an extraordinary season with a 7-4 win over Ursinus College at Franklin Field in the title game
1963 Football
After losing its season opener, the ’63 Lions ran the table, winning their final seven games while holding opponents to seven points or less in seven of the eight contests played.
The 2012 Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Friday, October 19, at 6 p.m. in the Brower Student Center. Visit http://community.tcnj.edu/Homecoming2012 for more information.
