During an April 7 lecture in Kendall Hall, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee joked, “I’ll try my best not to say something that’s a career-ender.” But remarks he made that same day to a TCNJ student journalist are reverberating far beyond campus.

During an interview with Mike Tracey ’10, editor-in-chief of TCNJ student newsmagazine The Perspective, Huckabee compared same-sex marriage to incest and polygamy, and stated that gay couples should not be allowed to adopt because, “Children are not puppies.”

When the remarks made national headlines (the hosts of The View and MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show discussed the story on air), Huckabee tried to discredit Tracey’s reporting and challenged him to release the “unedited” tape of their conversation. Tracey did just that, along with a statement that read, in part, “It is telling that nowhere in his statement did Huckabee suggest he was misquoted in the article, and rightfully so; we have the audio and transcripts to prove that everything reported is accurate.”
