The effort to name the softball field in honor of a coaching legend, and at the same time establish a permanent source of financial resources in support of TCNJ’s softball program, is moving closer to fruition.
The Dr. June Walker Softball Endowment Fund, established in fall 2007, has to date received approximately $56,000 in gifts and pledges toward a goal of $100,000, Peter Manetas, assistant vice president for development, said. Nearly 100 alumni and friends have made contributions.
“This…has been successful largely due to the softball alumnae themselves,” Manetas said, adding that Robin Payne ’83, a standout on TCNJ’s first NCAA championship softball team, and former assistant coach Cindy Cohen MEd ’80 “have been the leaders in this effort.”
Before her passing in 2001, Walker was the architect of a softball program that drew national attention for more than two decades. In her 22 seasons, the Lions posted a win-loss record of 721-154 and won five NCAA Division III championships. During that time, her players achieved 65 All-American and 14 Academic All-American individual honors.
“This endowment fund will not only provide a permanent means of support, but will honor someone who was instrumental in developing the College’s highly recognized softball program and in furthering women’s collegiate athletics nationwide,” Manetas said.
Those interested in contributing to the fund can contact Manetas at 609.771.2393 or manetas@tcnj.edu. Gifts that can be accepted include cash and planned gifts that are irrevocable. Commitments of $1,000 or more will be acknowledged with the establishment of a named seat in TCNJ’s Softball Complex in honor of the donor or someone of his or her choosing.
