Water volleyball, anyone?

When Hurricane Irene passed through the area in late August, it wreaked havoc on schedules but luckily caused no major damage to the campus’s physical plant. Numerous Welcome Week events were either moved indoors or cancelled. Move-in day for upperclassmen had to be rescheduled and extended to a second day. Convocation, which had been scheduled to take place outside on Quimby’s Prairie for the first time in 11 years, was cancelled. (Each school instead held its own welcome session for freshman.) And the start of classes for the fall semester was pushed back several hours. The storm knocked down two large trees and a number of limbs across campus; caused several buildings to leak, although only cosmetic damage was reported; blew two shutters off of Paul Loser Hall; and opened a sinkhole on the campus’s southeast side when a storm line collapsed. It also flooded the sand volleyball court that is located on the Travers-Wolfe Beach, but that didn’t stop these freshmen from wading in for some friendly competition.
