An arcade game featuring vintage carnival sounds and visuals that offers a modern take on the game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Oil paintings of New York City trashcans. A three-dimensional installation made from garden hoses, a fountain pump, and water. A digital photo of a scanned film negative shot using a pinhole camera. A batik. Consumer packaging for a popular suite of computer games. An interactive video installation that reads data from any magnetic swipe card and creates a collage of the card’s information.

These are just a small sampling of the diverse works that will be displayed during the TCNJ Art Alumni Exhibition 2010. The juried exhibition, which will feature 57 works from 35 artists, will run from September 15 through October 13 in TCNJ Art Gallery.

This summer, art department graduates were invited to submit works for consideration, and in response the show’s organizers received 435 submissions from 75 alumni, said Gallery Director Sarah Cunningham. Exhibit juror Dan Cameron had the difficult task of selecting which submissions made the show. Cameron is the founder and artistic director of U.S. Biennial, Inc., which produces Prospect New Orleans, and is also director of visual arts for the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, LA. He previously served as senior curator at the New Museum in New York, NY.

The works Cameron selected were created in a wide variety of media—from photography, printmaking, and painting, to electronics and Web design, to video production and found-object art, and just about everything in between. The result is an exhibit that one must see to truly appreciate.

The TCNJ Art Alumni Exhibition 2010 runs from September 15 to October 13 in TCNJ Art Gallery, which is located in room 115 of the Art and Interactive Multimedia Building. Click here for gallery hours and directions to the venue.

As part of Homecoming Weekend, an Artists Reception will be held on October 1 from 5:30-8 p.m. in the gallery. The evening will feature artist introductions as well as a dedication ceremony for the new building. The event is free, but registration is requested. Click here to register.

The College is partnering with the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) to learn more about the lives and careers of its alumni. SNAAP is a national survey of arts alumni from diverse institutions and fields of study. If you are a member of the class of 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, or 2009, you will receive an e-mailed invitation to complete the online survey this fall.

This groundbreaking study is a long-term attempt to better understand the lives and careers of those who graduates from an arts training program, regardless of whether you are currently a professional artist or not.

SNAAP will help to improve arts curricula across the country, inform public policy on the arts and arts education, and help parents and future students better understand the choices they make in education. Most importantly, SNAAP will help the College to better understand how to better serve you, our alumni, as well as our current and future students.

Make sure that we have your current e-mail address! Send your updated contact information to Lisa McCarthy, director of alumni affairs, at alumni@tcnj.edu.

We are proud to have our alumni joining the thousands of other alumni from throughout the country in improving arts education. For more information please visit www.snaap.indiana.edu.

Hey, that’s me!

My picture appears in the [article about] the Pub (June 2010 Then and Now)…. I am the guy second from the right….I attended TSC from 1974–79, but did not graduate because I spent too many hours in the Pub. Despite that I have done very well…. That was my freshman year, 1974, and probably Wednesday dollar-pitcher Happy Hour.

Walter Netzke

Hey, that’s not me!

Imagine my surprise when I saw myself listed as one of the TCNJ alumni members of East Windsor’s Kreps Middle School staff. I moved to the Tampa, Florida, area shortly after graduation as a business major. I’m curious who that person really is, and how my name got to be printed. A brief search of the alumni site doesn’t show any other Wolfsons for 1978 (although I graduated as a Gavzy!). Can you satisfy my curiosity?

Nina (Gavzy) Wolfson ’78

Ed’s note: Oops, our mistake. The photo of TCNJ alumni teachers from Kreps showed Ina Wolfson. Ina wrote to explain that, as a graduate student at the College, she studied for two years under Professor Yiqiang Wu while working toward her New Jersey state certification in ESL/Bilingual. Our apologies to Nina and Ina.

DeNicola photo strikes a chord

In the late ’80s, I was in the Jazz Lab with Professor Tony DeNicola (who sadly passed away a few years ago) leading us. It was one of the highlights of being a music major at TSC, and my best memories of the Rat were those nights. Thanks for including them!

Re: “Building solid futures for Trenton students”

Four of the five photos on pages 10 and 11 in the June 2010 issue were taken at Princeton-Blairstown Center where the TCHS juniors in the Bonner program spent two days in October 2009 developing leadership skills, learning conflict resolution techniques, and honing their abilities to collaborate and communicate to achieve success…. The skills that the Bonner program students work on through outdoor activities at this annual retreat in the woods include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship skills that result in responsible decision-making that will affect their whole life. Princeton-Blairstown Center is very proud of the students who commit to the Bridge to Employment program at the Medical Arts Training Community of TCHS. Along with co-sponsors Johnson & Johnson and TCNJ’s Bonner Center for Civic and Community Engagement, Blairstown applauds the dedication of these students to ensure bright futures for themselves, their families and their communities.

Julian Azan ’13, Dr. Cara Barlis, and Georgeann O’Leary MSN '99 pose with children they helped during their trip to Guatemala.

In June, two TCNJ staff members and a rising sophomore provided aid to impoverished Guatemalan villagers as part of an annual mission trip sponsored by a local church.

Dr. Cara Barlis, a consulting physician in TCNJ’s Office of Health Services; her colleague Georgeann O’Leary, RN, MSN ’99, APN; and Julian Azan ’13 were among the dozen volunteers who took part in Allentown Presbyterian Church’s (APC) “Spring of Hope” project, providing medical and dental care, as well as basic necessities, to villagers in the Lake Aitlan region of the Central American country.

APC has run mission trips to the location for years. However, the needs of local residents were particularly high this year after Tropical Storm Agatha, hit in early June, causing flooding and landslides that killed hundreds and displaced countless families.

The group spent four days in the towns of San Antonio Palopó and San Lucas Toliman, where its members set up clinics and treated people of all ages for a variety of intestinal and respiratory illnesses.

The stomach illnesses were a result of villagers bathing, washing clothes, and drinking from the same lake, O’Leary said. “The lake has no outlet, so it’s full of bacteria and parasites,” she explained. O’Leary, Barlis, and other trained volunteers dispensed medications to kill the parasites, and also instructed villagers how to make the water potable.

Since so many villagers cook over open flames inside their homes, a large number of them suffer from respiratory illnesses, O’Leary said. Her group provided Nebulizer treatments to many of the families that sought medical care in the clinics.

“In most cases, the villages that we [traveled] to had little to no access to medical care,” said Barlis, who was taking part in the APC trip for the second consecutive year. O’Leary said that many of the roads in and out of the villages were still blocked from mudslides and falling boulders.

Even in those places where there was access to medical care, villagers often didn’t have money to purchase medications, Barlis said. Therefore the group solicited donations of basic medications ahead of time to bring along. In some cases, the volunteers purchased the supplies themselves. Group members also paid their own airfare.

Despite these out-of-pocket costs, Barlis said the satisfaction she got from “helping people…in desperate need” made it easy to decide to return this year.

“It was such an amazing experience last year,” Barlis said. “I made wonderful connections with the others who were working and the people I saw in the clinics.”

O’Leary, though not a member of APC, decided to take part after hearing Barlis describe those experiences. While the trip provided a way for O’Leary to accomplish a personal goal—taking part in a medical mission in a developing country—the experience affected her profoundly, she said.

“You go into something like this with the hope of helping others, but the experience also does something for you,” O’Leary said. “I’m so glad I went. It changed my life.”

Winning a national championship in any track and field event is an extraordinary feat, but there’s something a little extra special to taking the top spot in the 100-meter dash. Junior Miriam Khan, a sprinter on TCNJ’s women’s outdoor track and field team, can spend the next 12 months relishing the title of “Fastest Woman in Division III Sports.”

With a blistering time of 11.67 seconds, Khan crossed the finish line first at the 2010 NCAA Division III National Championships at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH. She defeated the second-place finisher by a full tenth of a second to assume the peak position.

“There was no one key factor to me winning the race,” said Khan, who was quick to share credit with her coaches in attaining her lofty achievement. “It came from months of hard training and keeping my goal in mind. The entire season my goal was to do well at nationals and that’s all I’d think about during every workout to keep me motivated.”

From a historical standpoint, Khan ran the third fastest time in NCAA history in the 100-meter dash. She missed the all-time record (11.64) by three one-hundredths of a second. Khan is also the first athlete in Lions’ program history to win a national championship in the 100-meter event. (Two Lions have claimed second in the nation: on the women’s side, Debbie Alford ’84 did so in 1981, while Keith Taylor ’78 did so for the men in 1976.)

The last TCNJ athlete to win an individual national championship in outdoor track and field was Tiffany Clark ’06, who won the 400-meter event in 2005. Clark was joined by Brittny Boyd ’06, Khristelle Manuyag ’05, and Jessica Bonelli ’08 to claim the national championship in 4×100-meter relay that same year.

Led by head coach Phil Jennings and assistant coach Justin Lindsey, the Lions are coming off an outstanding season and performance at the NCAA Championships. The team placed eighth in the country at the 2010 NCAAs, which included a second-place finish by senior Jianna Spadaccini ’10 in the 800-meter event and a seventh-place finish by Prisicilla Senyah ’10 in the 55-meter hurdles. In total, seven TCNJ women earned All-American honors. The women’s team also seized its 18th consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference championship.

“Once we got the nerves and jitters out of the way during the first day at NCAAs, the [team] really focused and I was just along for the ride enjoying what they accomplished,” said sprint coach Lindsey, who was recently named The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) 2010 National Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year. “I think we’ve re-established TCNJ as a force in Division III track and field and we have a lot of returning athletes and newcomers to continue that trend next season.”

Directors’ Cup ratings are the results of an accumulation of points accrued at the various NCAA Division III Championships to evaluate the ranking of a college’s overall athletic program. Last academic year, the Lions earned 677.75 points thanks to seven different teams’ Top 10 national finishes: women’s soccer (third), men’s swimming and diving (sixth), women’s swimming and diving (ninth), women’s indoor track and field (eighth), women’s lacrosse (fifth), women’s outdoor track and field (eighth), and women’s tennis (ninth).

By placing eighth, TCNJ is one of only two institutions to finish in the Top 10 in each of the 15 years the Directors’ Cup has been awarded. Williams College (MA) is the other school to accomplish this feat.
