Students in Lincoln Konkle’s “Springsteen’s Lyrics as Literature” course are examining the timeless, universal themes—such as growing up, love, death, political power, religious faith, and doubt—that are a part of the Boss’s songwriting.

Last spring, students in the Professor Jean Slobodzian’s Classroom Application of Sign Communication course visited several area schools for the deaf. For the second year in a row, TCNJ’s student newspaper, The Signal,won first place in general excellence for a four-year college at the New Jersey College Newspaper Contest. Numerous Signal staff writers also garnered individual honors.

Biology major Sara Jackrel ’10 and mathematics major Glen Wilson ’10 were awarded the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarships for the 2009–2010 academic year. A total of 278 scholarships were awarded to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States, and only six recipients were from New Jersey Institutions.

The NJAV project is a senior engineering project that began in 2004 at TCNJ, in which a team of engineering students creates an autonomous vehicle to compete in the annual Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC). Rather than starting from scratch each year, TCNJ engineering students improve upon the previous team’s vehicle.

The Class of 2009 has challenged their Class of 1959 counterparts to a competition to determine which group can get the highest percentage of its members to donate to the College.

For the second year in a row, the College Union Board (CUB) has been sponsoring a series of free events that it’s calling “CUB Nooners.” The goal, said CUB Executive Director Katerina Gkionis ’09, has been to “spice things up” in the Student Center.

Last winter, when TCNJ received $1 million from an anonymous source, the donor or donors stipulated that $750,000 of the funds be used to support scholarships for underrepresented groups. In keeping with that wish, the College designated the money toward scholarships for students in the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Program.

Four TCNJ students defied gravity this summer when they conducted experiments over the Gulf of Mexico aboard one a NASA DC-9 jet, affectionately called the “Vomit Comet.” Read more about their experiences.

Senior Week, the annual rite of passage for TCNJ’s graduating classes, returned this May after a one-year hiatus. The tradition started in 1999 as a way for seniors to spend the week leading up to Commencement, together, in the same dorms where many of them started their college careers (Wolfe Hall).

Despite its name, Gospel Choir Ministries (GCM) is about more than just singing. The group, which has been active on campus for 35 years, devotes many hours to community service activities.

Adam Mamwala was crowned “New Jersey King of Campus Comedy” at the 2007 NJ Comedy Festival in December. He beat out 36 other campus clowns from 12 colleges to win the festival competition. In the process, he picked up $1,000 cash, a trip for two to Cancun, and the chance to open for a big-name comic at New York’s Laugh Factory.

Terence Grado ’09 was one of just 13 college students to take part in the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL’s) Second Annual Current and Future Leaders Study Mission to Israel this past winter. During his 10-day trip, Grado discussed the peace process with Israeli and Palestinian journalists, and met with “everyday Israeli citizens, minorities within Israel…members of Knesset, Israeli students, and [Israeli] soldiers.”

This June, four TCNJ students took a ride on a NASA DC-9 jet—affectionately referred to as the “vomit comet”—as part of NASA’s Microgravity University. Brandon Bentzley ’08, Mike Hvasta ’08, Justin Nieusma ’09, all physics majors, and Rachel Sherman ’09, a physics education major, were accepted into the highly selective program based on a research proposal they submitted last semester.

For years, Vera Goodkin, a Holocaust survivor, kept her story of atrocity, tragedy, inspiration, and courage to herself out of fear and pain. Last fall though, she shared it with English major Ashley Reichelmann ’08. The exchange between Reichelmann and Goodkin was one of many that occurred between TCNJ students and Holocaust survivors as part of an ethnography project.

When Rick Kamber, professor of philosophy, approached James Van Strander ’08 he had an assignment for his former student involving the works of revered American philosopher William James. Kamber ’s proposal was not a typical reading or writing assignment, but rather a request that Van Strander assist in the editing process for the forthcoming book William James: Essays and Lectures.

The day an artist sells his or her first piece of work is a memorable one. For Jennifer Kakaletris ’08, that day came in her junior year at a New York City gallery.

TCNJ’s chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the History Student Honors Society, was named “Best Chapter” by its national headquarters. The award, which was earned through outstanding accomplishments in community service, consists of a $250 grant toward the purchase of history books for the College library.

In a world of continual injustice, a few strong individuals choose to fight inequality, violence, and other problems. One of these individuals is Paul Harris Jr. ’07, a political science major at the College.

Students at The College of New Jersey are not solely involved in researching and contributing to the community — they’re doing so for the solar system, as well.

My grandmother suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, my uncle has diabetes, and a friend of mine died from cystic fibrosis when he was just 16. Stem cell research could lead to possible cures for these diseases that people I love have suffered or died from, ” said Krysta Johns-Harris ’08, a biology major at TCNJ. These occurrences in her life influenced her decision to pursue a passion. Along with Natalie Cedeno ’08, another biology major, Johns-Harris cofounded a chapter of the Student Society for Stem Cell Research (SSSCR.) Other board members include Regina Sommese ’08, treasurer, and Jennifer DeSousa ’08, secretary.

The cofounder of a long-board company …a Miss Teen New Jersey winner who competed in the Miss Teen USA pageant… the president and co-founder of a student playwrights’ association…a 14-year-old who plans to study chemical engineering…a nationally ranked BMX racer…a ballet dancer who has performed at Lincoln Center. These are just some of the 1,316 exceptional students who the College welcomed as members of the Class of 2011.
