The athletics department’s annual golf outing, held June 11 at Mercer Oaks Golf Course in West Windsor, was the program’s most successful tournament ever with more than 200 golfers teeing up to support Lions athletics.

Junior Miriam Khan’s blistering performance at the 2010 NCAA Division III National Championships was the third fastest time in NCAA history in the 100-meter dash, as she became the first Lion to win a national championship in the event.

Throughout her career, Hillary Klimowicz ’09 has garnered numerous accolades for her athleticism, dedication, and leadership. Her most recent accomplishment is being named the 2009 State Farm/Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association Division III Player of the Year, a first for a TCNJ women’s basketball player and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) athlete.

The women’s basketball team will be making the program’s first trip to the Final Four after an exciting win this past weekend.

Former Lions’ women’s basketball All-American Kimm Lacken ’88 was named a finalist for the 2009 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Hall of Fame. A four-time Scholar-Athlete, she is the College’s all-time leading scorer (1,518 points) and rebounder (855) in women’s basketball, having earned Kodak All-America honors as a senior during the 1987–88 season.

Professor Emerita Lilyan Wright and former swimming standout Ava Kiss ’08 were among the honorees at February’s National Girls and Women in Sport Day.

Dave Ilaria ‘03, who was appointed the athletic facilities director in August, is responsible for coordinating the sports facilities around the practice and game schedules of the Lions’ 20 varsity teams, its large intramurals program, and special events such as Convocation and Commencement.

Former athletic trainer Joe Camillone, who retired in August, was awarded the Dr. Donald Grover Memorial Award by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) in September. The ECAC bestows the award each year to a trainer who has achieved outstanding success in his or her career and made an unusual contribution in the interest of [...]

Several former Lion athletes and one alumnus coach were honored at a ceremony in early October.

TCNJ’s athletic department was named the 2007-08 recipient of the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey (CAANJ) Directors’ Cup for Division III. This award is bestowed annually to the top collegiate athletic departments at the different NCAA levels.

Summer might be considered the off-season for TCNJ’s athletics teams, but it did feature the appointment of two full-time coaches with long histories at the College. In late June, Kelly Williams ’93 was named head coach of the men’s basketball team. Just two weeks later, Dean Glus MEd ’92 was permanently appointed head baseball coach.

Despite the 100-degree heat and high humidity on June 10, 103 people took to the links at West Windsor’s Mercer Oaks Golf Course to take part in the 17th annual TCNJ Athletics Golf Outing. The event, sponsored this year by Sodexho, has become a cornerstone fund-raising activity of the athletics department.

The College’s athletics program finished in third place in the race for the 2007–08 US Sports Academy Directors’ Cup, making this the 13th straight year that TCNJ has finished in the top 10. The Directors’ Cup is awarded to the best overall collegiate athletics programs at the Division I, II, and III levels. TCNJ competes at the Division III level.

Producers for the Fox Sports Net show Amazing Sports Stories used George Ackerman Park to film segments from one of the episodes. The weekly show uses archival footage, interviews, and re-enactments to tell the stories of extraordinary athletes or teams from sports history.

Head tennis coach Scott Dicheck was named the Coach of the Year for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) New Jersey for 2007. Dicheck, in his eighth season as the coach at TCNJ, has directed the men’s and women’s programs to considerable success over the years.

Center Hillary Klimowicz ’09 was awarded Honorable Mention on the State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team, and Head Coach Dawn Henderson was tabbed as the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region 3 Coach of the Year.

In January, Vice President for Student Life Jim Norfleet appointed John Castaldo ’82, ’83 as TCNJ’s athletic director (AD). Castaldo had been serving as interim AD since June 2007.

Ava Kiss ’08 set both a TCNJ and a national Division III record with a time of 55.08 in the 100-butterfly event at the 2008 NCAA Division III Championship, held in Miami in March.

In May, the newest class joined the Athletic Hall of Fame in conjunction with Reunion Weekend festivities. Five individuals (one posthumously) and three teams were inducted.

Grant, a former guard at The College of New Jersey and 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference Metro Division III Men ’s Basketball Player of the Year, is currently a member of the Harlem Globetrotters. He plays for the Arizona affiliate of the Globetrotters and tours with the team, thrilling audiences around the country.

Five athletes and two teams were inducted into The College of New Jersey Athletic Hall of Fame on May 6, 2007.

Hillary Klimowicz ’09 was profiled in and pictured on the cover of the March 5, 2007, edition of Sports Illustrated for her decision to walk away from an NCAA Division I basketball scholarship and transfer to TCNJ in search of a more well rounded undergraduate experience.

For many, a move to the other side of the world, with the differences in culture and language, would be frightening. For Rick Dell, formerly the head baseball coach at TCNJ, the move was the opportunity of a lifetime.

John Castaldo ‘82 was selected to serve as interim director of athletics this academic year, while a national search for a full-time director is completed.

Fear is an emotion that is unwelcome in the mind of an athlete. It puts him or her on the defensive, which can hinder performance. Competitive athletes must be on the offensive and think positively, never considering risk or the dangers in sport.
