Alternate Winter Break: Costa Rica

TCNJ’s chapter of the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children sent eight students to Costa Rica during winter break to volunteer at a rehab clinic, teach health education to students at a soup kitchen, and help with earthquake relief efforts at the local Red Cross.

Alumna Details Her Work with Embryonic Stem Cells

As part of her MD/PhD coursework at Yale University, Katherine Uyhazi ’05 is doing research work at the Yale Stem Cell Center. In February, Uyhazi returned to TCNJ to give a talk, “MDs, PhDs, and Stem Cells: Everything You Wanted to Know but were Afraid to Ask,” as part of the Young Alumni Lecture Series. Afterward, she told us about the research she is doing.

Lacken, Former Basketball Standout, Named a Finalist for CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame

Former Lions’ women’s basketball All-American Kimm Lacken ’88 was named a finalist for the 2009 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Hall of Fame. A four-time Scholar-Athlete, she is the College’s all-time leading scorer (1,518 points) and rebounder (855) in women’s basketball, having earned Kodak All-America honors as a senior during the 1987–88 season.

Harpist Kristy L. Chmura ’03, cellist Ardith Collins ’01, and drummer Josh Bicknell ’03 formed double-breasted while students at TCNJ. While they describe their brand of music as “couture rock,” the band feels at home playing some of the state’s legendarily gritty rock clubs. With a new CD out and a growing fan base, things are looking up for this trio.

Dahne Award Funds to be Contributed in Memory of Psychology Student

In 2008, TCNJ’s Department of Psychology was awarded the Mildred Dahne Award for Faculty Excellence. The department has decided to designated its $8,000 prize to the Laurie Ann Mandara Scholarship Endowment Fund for psychology, said Pete Manetas, TCNJ’s vice president for development.

Professor’s New Book Examines What Happens “When Boys Become Parents”

In his new and insightful book, When Boys Become Parents, Mark S. Kiselica, professor of counselor education, draws on his many years of counseling teenage fathers to offer a compassionate look at the difficult life circumstances and the complicated hardships these young men experience. He dispels many of the myths surrounding teenage fatherhood and shows that, contrary to popular belief, these young men are often emotionally and physically involved in relationships with their partner and their child.
